In 2008, Dr. Daniel Farb founded the start-up Leviathan Energy Wind Lotus, Ltd in Israel. Following the business’ success, Leviathan was soon taken over by Flower Turbines LLC in 2013, later leading to Flower Turbine BV’s creation. The company has since made a name for itself with its clever – and eye-catching – creation, leading to their growing popularity and worldwide distribution in places such as the Netherlands, Germany, Columbia, and Israel.

The idea behind their product was inspired by wind turbines, tulips, and the desire to create an affordable and more accessible alternative energy option. The company claims their product to have a lower footprint, produce less waste, and be easier to install than traditional wind turbines.

Flower Power

With traditional wind turbines, their large size, maintenance cost, noise, and ability to impact birds can all prevent their widespread implementation. Though wind turbines still have a far lower environmental impact than fossil fuels, these downsides are problematic for some individuals who are hesitant to endorse this renewable energy.

Flower Turbines seeks to appeal to even the largest of critics with their product that supposedly contains all of the positive attributes of traditional wind turbines without any of the negative downsides. With a lower environmental footprint, no noise or shadow pollution, and no harm to birds in the surrounding area, it seems as if Flower Turbines might just be the key to phasing out fossil fuels for good.

These art-inspired turbines can generate up to 14000 KWh/year, be installed on rooftops, and come in three different sizes that can better accommodate the needs of various clients. The smaller size is best for off-grid projects or residential homes, whereas a cluster of their largest turbines produces enough energy to power entire office floors.

The company is currently expanding its outreach by incorporating charging stations for bikes. This can result in a sustainable package that companies can easily implement to lower their footprint, something that traditional wind turbines cannot do. Roy Osing, the EU Director for Flower Turbines says, “We are not a competitor or an alternative for the big energy companies. We are a solution provider for companies and corporations that really want to pivot their business towards sustainability.”

Though Flower Turbine has seen great success throughout their short life-span, they are not the only ones creating a non-traditional turbine. Two companies also in the running for unusual turbines are Vortex Bladeless, known for their bladeless wind turbines, and Alpha 311, known for their vertical turbine that supposedly doesn’t require wind to generate energy. Vortex Bladeless even hit the mainstream online forum, Reddit, when a picture of their bladeless turbine led to widespread approval and amusement for its unusual and even comedic look.

The Growth of Wind Turbines

Wind energy has seen an increasingly large uptick within the past decade, most notably in the US and EU. In the United States, two key players in this field are Iowa and Kansas, with both states garnering an impressive 58% and 43% of their energy from wind farms. Currently, the US as a whole has enough wind farms to provide 8% of the total energy needed throughout the country. Those numbers are expected to increase even more as the country has recently installed more wind turbines in 2020 alone than in the past 15 years.

In the EU, wind energy dominates their renewable energy market. With a strong commitment to a sustainable future, various countries throughout the region have taken it upon themselves to pass certain regulations regarding renewable energy. Currently, the European Union produces roughly 15% of their needed energy from wind farms, with the plan to reach nearly 25% by 2030.

Both the USA and the EU produce a rather substantial number of atmospheric emissions, so it would make sense that they take responsible action to remediate their giant footprints. Since they both also have a large influence on the rest of the world, their commitment to implementing renewable energy options can hopefully inspire other countries and regions to follow suit. With companies such as Flower Turbine creating alternative energy options to appease a larger audience, we can expect even more widespread implementation from both the EU and USA.
