The growth of electric vehicles (EV) has sky-rocketed within the last decade. Tesla has made itself synonymous with electric vehicles and eccentric CEO. They have paved the way for the popularity of electric vehicles and inspired other car manufacturers to quickly introduce their own models.

Despite significant progress, one key vehicle is missing from the electric automobile world: electric trucks, particularly work trucks. Some companies currently manufacture regular trucks, and other companies that are intending to, but perhaps the most recently anticipated model comes from an unlikely competitor in the world of electric vehicles – Ford.

Ford has just released the details of their new F-150 Lightning Pro last week, and they did not disappoint. The truck is expected to be decked out with all the bells and whistles that you can think of for an electric vehicle. The F-150 features up to a 300-mile range, quick recharging time, a modem, a storage space, ample power, and enough interior space to accommodate the needs of the majority of customers.

What makes this truck so special? Ford is marketing it toward companies, which means that businesses all over the country will be encouraged to shift their work trucks to electric batteries, which could make a massive dent in their carbon footprint.

Furthermore, the price is also incredibly consumer-friendly, making the truck available to a wider range of audiences. An LCA is currently one of the most reliable ways to assure that a product is living up to its eco-friendly name and can provide transparency for the consumer side.

According to the LCA data on electric vehicles, the manufacturing process is similar to, and in some cases even more so, regular gas-powered vehicles when it comes to carbon emissions. However, the data also says that though this may be the case for the manufacturing process, during the use stage of the vehicle their emissions are so low that it makes up for their high manufacturing emissions. This tells us that the overall environmental footprint of an electric vehicle is still significantly lower than that of gas-powered vehicles.

Electric vehicles are perhaps one of the best examples as to why LCAs are an important tool in establishing an environmental footprint. Due to the carbon-intensive manufacturing process, electric vehicles wouldn’t seem to be an eco-friendlier option. However, the LCA can provide an overall picture for both the manufacturer and consumer to see that they are still the more environmentally friendly option. Without this LCA, that knowledge might go unknown, and therefore the continued innovation around electric vehicles would cease to exist.

Ford’s Commitment

Ford is committed to shifting towards electric vehicles that they have increased their development spending by $8 billion, which now makes their overall EV budget a whopping $20 billion. The company further cemented their commitment to battery-powered vehicles by announcing their goal to increase their EV sales to 40% of their global sales by 2030. These numbers are astronomical and show the growing commitment that Ford has for incorporating more EVs into their fleet.

Whether or not their intentions are for the sake of the environment or to jump on board the electric vehicle trend is up for debate. Nevertheless, the result of their initiatives will be fewer emissions being released into the atmosphere, less waste, and more cost-savings for the consumer side.

Electric vehicles have become rather prominent at the turn of the century and have had an even greater boom within the past decade. This has yielded many positive results for climate change and the overall view toward more sustainable alternatives.
